How serious buyers price an exact-match technology name

2026-09-08 · 6 min

Most domain listings lead with a feeling. Exact-match technology names should be priced like a brand asset with a short list of checks, then a conversation. The checks are boring on purpose.

Start with the string. 5GCloud is seven characters, two real words, and the order the market already uses. You do not teach anyone how to spell it, and you do not invent a syllable. That is the entire first test. Names that fail it can still be valuable. They just cost more to teach.

Second is category timing. 5G and cloud used to be different budget lines. They are collapsing into one architecture story: a distributed cloud that rides a mobile network, not a region you rent by the hour. A name that already contains both words is a shortcut in a sales deck. It is not a shortcut in a search algorithm, and anyone who sells it that way is guessing.

Third is the TLD. .monster does not inherit .com equity. Treat that as a feature you are buying or a reason to walk away. The extension adds attitude and memorability. It subtracts the default trust a registrar’s oldest suffix still carries. Brands that want to feel large and a little dangerous can use that. Brands that want to feel like a bank should not pay for it.

Fourth is liquidity. A single-word .com in a hot category has a crowd. This name has a narrower buyer: a company, carrier product line, or platform that wants to own the phrase. Narrower demand is why the band is a band. $55,000 to $105,000 is the owner’s range for an outright sale, not an appraisal, not a comparable-sales study, and not a promise that the next offer will be countered.

When you write, send the entity, the use, and a number. “What is your best price?” is not an offer. A number, even one under the band, is. The owner would rather read a real bid than a tour of the website.
